For the 2nd time this year, an egg recall has been ordered. An Ohio egg farm is implicated in this recall. Cal-Maine foods is the supplier for these eggs. Ohio Fresh Eggs products these eggs to the supplier. Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg both provided eggs from the egg recall earlier in 2010. Ohio Fresh Egg is in part owned by the same person that has a stake in those two farms.

Recalling 288,000 eggs in egg recall

The largest egg distributer in the U.S. is Cal-Maine foods. In eight states, eggs were recalled by this company. The states were listed. Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, California and Arkansas were all included. Springfield, Sun Valley, James Farm and Sunny Meadow are all impacted brands of eggs. A full list of UPC codes incorporated in the egg recall can be found here. No illnesses have yet been linked to this egg recall.

Connection to "habitual violator" in egg recall

The farm that provided the recalled eggs to Cal-Maine has been under scrutiny within the past. The Ohio Fresh Eggs farm shut down in December 2006. This happened because Austin “Jack” DeCoster invested $126 million to the farm and it wasn’t reported. DeCoster has a stake in Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg, which were responsible for the egg recall earlier this year that sickened 1,600 individuals.

Egg recall due to salmonella

In general, most eggs aren't tainted with salmonella bacteria. Five microorganisms per egg of salmonella are found. This is just thinking about 1 in every 20,000 chicken eggs has salmonella in it. It usually takes 100 microorganisms or more per egg to make a person sick. It's easy to avoid salmonella bacteria. Completely cooking eggs to a temperature of 160 degrees will kill any bacteria present. You are able to also protect yourself by purchasing eggs from someone you know who treats their hens well. This is because hens that are in a dirty place that is overcrowded is more likely to get salmonella.
