Because apples are vulnerable to worms and insects they are sprayed with pesticides several times as they grow. Always wash the fruits well in water and peel waxed apples.



Infection due to bacteria



Unpasteurized apple juice can cause serious illness due to E.coli and other bacteria present in the juice. The elderly,pregnant women ,children and people with weak immunity should take precautions against unpasteurized juice. Always check the label before the purchase.

Apples beat cancer



Epidemiologists from Finland's National Public Health Institute concluded that flavonoids from apples was linked with a reduced risk of developing cancer.



Their study revealed that people who regularly consumed flavonoid-rich foods were  20 per cent less likely to develop cancer.



Also high consumption of apples was also directly associated with the lowest risk for coronary mortality.

 
Apples enhances lung function



British researchers found that apple eaters had better lung function compared with non-apple eaters.



scientists discovered a strong link between enhanced lung function and the number of apples eaten each week after analysing the health and dietary records of 2,512 men.




These researchers believe that it is the antioxidant-like phytonutrients found in apples and a flavonoid called quercetin which reduces the risk of cancer and heart attacks.




APPLES WARD OFF STROKES



The health outcomes of 9,208 men followed for 28 years by Finnish researchers found that individuals who ate the most apples had the lowest risk of suffering a stroke, due to the phytonutrients found in apples.

FRENCH APPLE YOGURT SHAKE



Ingredients


3 cups diced or sliced apples
2 cups plain, low-fat yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons brown sugar

 

METHOD



* Cook the apples for 5-10 minutes in 1/2 cup water until soft.

* Keep 1 cup apples separately.

* Add 1 cup yogurt with the remaining ingredients into a blender

* Blend very briefly.

* Serve in tall glasses.

* Mix remaining yogurt and apples into blended mixture.
