Bad throat infections

Throat infections are not that simple to treat nowadays. In most cases, wrong usage of antibiotics is to blame.

Often, antibiotics are not required to treat throat infections as most of them are  viral and not bacterial. Regular warm saline gargles and plenty of rest should be enough.

However, when there is persistent fever and throat pain, antibiotics may be needed. One needs to be sure about the frequency and duration of the antibiotic prescribed as the full course has to be completed. When this is not followed, the bugs become resistant and the infection does not resolve.

Antibiotics should always be taken from registered medical practitioners. If anyone has a known allergy to any antibiotic , this should always be conveyed to the doctor.

And last but not the least, patience is required as the infection takes atleast 4-5 days to get better!

Hi Naveen, This is a very good piece of advise to the General Practitioners, General Physicians and ENT surgeons who prescribe very strong antibiotics for simple pharyngitis. This will lead to resistance to even common pathogens. My advise would be to wait for a couple of days with simple home remedies like Warm salt water gargle about four times a day and if this does not start improving the symptoms, the simplest of the Antibiotics (Amoxicillin or Clarithromycin or Doxycycline) should be given. Please avoid strong Antibiotics like Azithromycin, Ciprocloxacin and many other advanced Antibiotics.Dr. Jagadish Nanjappa, MBBS, MRCP (UK), MRCP (Respiratory)Specialist Registrar, Respiratory Medicine, Leeds, United Kingdom.
