Making a habit of having salads everyday is the best gift that one can give oneself in the form of good health and variety in eating. Eating salads not only provide you with good nutrition in every meal but also helps to keep the doctor away. Yes you are right; salads are fresh nutrition packed foods and help to guard one against many chronic and serious diseases.

 

It is best for one to create a taste for fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Green salads made of them help one to get all the vitamins and minerals need for a healthy life. Besides they have a rich source of folic acid, calcium and iron and jiffy salad made of fresh fruits and vegetables with some salad dressing oil like olive oil helps to prevent that pooping in of a multi-vitamin daily. Not to forget, fresh and raw vegetables and fruits have all the anti-oxidants to protect one against cancer and many other serious diseases. 

 

The benefit of salads as dietary fiber cannot be overlooked, as it promotes digestive health, helps one to protect oneself from cancer and it also forms one of the best ways to lose weight besides exercise and a positive outlook. Yes, salads have bulk too and are low in calories and can be eaten in many forms. So, do create a taste for these versatile raw vegetables and fruits and eat them liberally with your lunch, dinners or even as an afternoon snack and reduce that bulk you need not carry at all. To add bulk and make it filling, do add carbohydrates like boiled potato pieces, pasta, beans, corn, egg or broken wheat; adding carbohydrates makes it filling. Adding of carbohydrates makes it a full-fledged wholesome meal.

 

Yes, you can make salads real delicious and appetizing by adding variety; variations help one enjoy this meal, Make salads in a jiffy by adding different foods, of different textures and flavors and vary the type at each meal to make it real appetizing and good. Enjoy fresh and raw salads by adding crunchy green leaves like spinach, lettuce, cabbage, coriander and curry leaves and nuts like almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, and cereals like boiled corn, beans, peas, and boiled lentils like black channa, rajmah, and herbs like basil, oregano, mint, holy basil, and other proteins like boiled eggs or chicken and toss it with a salad dressing of honey, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar. If you appreciate sweetness you may add raisins, apricots, prunes and figs. Creativity is the mother of invention and you can make various combinations on each day and enjoy the taste and texture of a good and healthy meal.

 

If one is a pure vegetarian one can experiment with vegetables and fruits like spinach, arugula, watercress, sprouts, parsley, cilantro, red cabbage, radish, beet, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, green peppers, red peppers, red onion, shallot, baby corn, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, artichoke hearts, green beans, peas, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, button mushrooms, baby bella mushrooms, shitake mushrooms, black olives, kalamata olives, avocados, walnuts, cashews, almonds, apples, pears, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, mandarin oranges, blood oranges, pineapples, currants, raisins, dried cranberries, and pine nuts. However do not use all everyday but make up different combinations.

 

If you are a meat eater you could try out combinations with bacon bits (real bacon, not fake!), other healthy toppings like grilled chicken or fish (tuna and salmon are especially good) and grilled sirloin strips. Hardboiled eggs are excellent choices, and one of the tastiest salads I've ever eaten starred thinly sliced grilled duck with walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette.

 

Raw and fresh salads are ideal for lunch and dinner also if one prefers to be light and active. Do look out for various salad recipes to try out and be healthy and strong. One is sure to have realized by now that one can enjoy variety and good health by going on a salad meal or eating it as a side dish.
