You do everything possible to lose weight, but still your excess weight is stubborn and you don’t know where you are going wrong. Even when you are eating your share of fruits and vegetable, the needle of your weighing scale stays put.

The key to weight loss is consuming fewer calories than what your body needs. Sit with a nutritionist to understand your specific caloric count. Keep counting your calories. We Indians tend to snack quite often. So split it into four meals, two of 500 calories and two of 250 calories each. Be careful on what you are snacking on.

Every day we all spend a few hours running errands and we feel that we have lost some weight. But by running errands we can only burn 400 calories.  Short bursts of intense activity helps you to burn more calories. Do brisk walk in the evenings. Swimmers can switch from freestyle or breast strokes to more challenging crawl every few laps, or just go a little faster. Carry your groceries by using the stairs. By doing these small changes in your life can make a lot of difference to your weight.

Keep portions of even healthy food in check. The best way to know if you are eating too much is by maintaining a diary. Remember that one cup of cherries is barely 45 calories, but a medium banana has more than 100 calories.  Instead of bananas you can have oranges, melons and red grapes. Though nuts are healthy for you, but be careful with the quantity. One cup boiled mashed potatoes will have more calories than one cup of raw or steamed mixed green or yellow vegetables.

If you feel like having an ice-cream once in a while, then go ahead and have it, but don’t overdo with it and at the same time don’t be too hard on yourself by omitting all your favourite foods from your diet. By being too strict with yourself you will end up suffering from acute cravings and eventually end up binging.
