Exam stress, peer pressure, high parental expectations, ragging in school, childhood seems like an endless obstacle race! But as parents we should try our best to give our child a childhood to cherish and to bring them up in such a way that they are able to deal with their stressful situations.
As a parent you should avoid communicating your anxieties to your child. Use positive reinforcement. Parents must encourage and guide the child as per his abilities and likings. Don’t try to live through your child and force your own wills. Don’t compare your child with anybody because remember that every child is different. Avoid criticism. Always ensure that your child has a healthy diet because that is the most important for a child’s development. Remember that your attitude will dictate your child’s emotions. Parents should not panic, blame or stress the child during exams. If you remain positive and supportive, you child will put in his best.
Maintain a very strong bond with your child. There should be open, honest communications as it bolsters self –esteem and build confidence. Inspire confidence in your child. Ask him for his opinions on things. Educate your children about drugs, smoking, alcohol and sex. Let them develop their preferences. Do not constantly tell them what is better for them. Make them responsible because it is they who will have to face the world. Encourage your child to make friendship with children with positive traits.
Notice the emotions that your child shows and talk to your child about them. More importantly give your child the opportunity to talk about his or her own feelings, by being a willing listener. Watch for signs of abuse by others and be aware about problems he may be facing in school.
