We have all heard about sleep walk, but have you ever heard about people committing sexual acts in sleep? Sleep disorders is generally related to difficulties in falling asleep or uncontrollable or excessive sleepiness, sleep walking and sleep talking and even bed wetting. But very few people are aware of the term sexsomnia.

A person who suffering from sexsomnia  engage in sex while they are sleeping. The intensity of this sleep sex varies from one sexsomniac to another. Some just groan while sleeping. Some engage in sexual activity that is masturbatory. Extreme cases are those who become violent while committing sexual acts. A person suffering from sexsomnia does not have much control over this situation. Once they wake up they don't remember anything about what they did in their sleep. Sometimes even if they are aware of their behaviours, they shy away from help. They generally feel scared about the fact that people might judge it differently.

Though there are no specific reasons for sexomnia, but certain reasearches have shown that it is mainly because of genetic reasons. The other factors that can aggravate sexsomnia are stress, lack of proper sleep, emotional imbalance and use of drugs and alcohol.

It is advisable to seek medical help for this condition, as sufferers may experience many negative self sabotaging emotions such a guilt, shame fear, frustration and anger. Husband wife relationships are put to test when couples have to deal with such uncomfortable and awkward situations. But sexsomnia is not always severe or troublesome as long as these acts are limited within the partner. Some couples think it to be a harmless surprise while others find it difficult to deal with it.

Treatment for sexsomania is important. Taking medical help can increase awareness and understanding towards the disorder and can help couples and individuals deal with this problem in a more constructive and attractive manner. Treatment of sexsomania involves medication, counseling, change in lifestyle and behaviour therapy.
