Every surgical technique has advantages and disadvantages. The onus lies on the surgeon to judiciously choose the optimum procedure for the patient. Most of the laproscope are market driven stunts. This is just overdoing a simple procedure just because the West are doing it. The companies marketing these products provide great incentives. It is the technical foundation of a procedure which should be a choice rather than done as a herd mentality. Laproscope gall bladder surgery clearly out weighs open surgery whereas lap appendix is not a very convincing a procedure as open appendectomy. The same applies to hernias. Ventral hernias are a challenge to the surgeon. Lap repair does not address all the technical issues associated with this disease. Lap surgery in case of ventral hernias is just a cover up surgery.
About 60-70 percent of inguinal hernia as well as Ventral hernia all over the world are done by laproscope. For Ventral hernia laparoscopic mesh repair is of very high standard today. You will not be surprised to see future editions of surgical text books saying that hernia repair can also be done by open method. Similar arguments were there for gall bladder surgery a decade ago. Times are changing and just not that patients are opting for laproscope hernia repair also.
