Obesity has now become an epidemic. How do you know if you are obese? Well, the most commonly used index is the Body Mass Index or BMI which ideally has to be in the range of 20-25. If it is above 25, then you are "overweight". Above 30 , you are "obese". Above 40, it is called "morbid obesity" that is obesity has become life threatening.

Recent research suggests that even persons who don't obviously "look fat" may have a lot of fat around their internal organs which is called "visceral fat". This too can lead to Diabetes, Lipid disorders and other ailments.

Very often you may notice that people who have a "beer belly" also have Diabetes,High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol. Their uric acid levels are also high frequently. This constellation of medical illnesses is called the "metabolic syndrome" with a high incidence in South India. Genetic factors combined with modern day practices like sedentary lifestyle, high mental stress and wrong dietary practices contribute to this.

Obesity is also associated with infertility and loss of libido. Many overweight people tend to snore at night which can increase the stress on the heart and lungs.

Obese individuals need to get their complete blood tests done including thyroid function tests and relevant hormonal assays if required.

The best treatment is to exercise regularly and follow a low fat diet with plent of fruits and greens. In refractory cases, advanced surgical options are available.
