Hey! What are you planning to do this Holi? Will it be the same gulal, sweets and bingeing on food-and-drinks routine? Not quite, with me around, that is! Start your day right if you don't want to end up with indigestion by the time the festivities are over.

On Holi, start your day with a brisk 30-minutes' walk, provided you wake up early enough to have the privilege of an undisturbed saunter. Follow this up with a glass of water and a fresh fruit - an apple or an orange.

When at a Holi party, put the music to good use by shaking a leg to the bhangra beat. Go really slow on the alcohol - ask for a fruity cocktail or a mixed fruit punch instead. Stay away from anything with a large dose of dehydrating spirits.

When its snack-time, gorge on fruit/sprout chaats more than anything else. Go for the dahi bhallas - but go easy on them as they have a lot of carbohydrate and are basically deep fried. Stay away from the gujhias, laddoos and chips. If you are a non-vegetarian, have some grilled fish or chicken but not the red meat. Toss in some green salad with your non-vegetarian fare.

Come lunch-time, have very small helpings of whatever catches your fancy, so that you don't feel deprived of the special Holi lunch. Restrain the urge to eat lots of dessert, so that you don’t regret it on Monday.

Some home remedies for good digestion, in case you decide to ignore my friendly advice are as follows:

1.      Chew thin slices of ginger with a little salt sprinkled on them. They aid the secretion of digestive juices so that you can eat all you please and yet not suffer!

2.      Have a glass of warm water mixed with fresh lime and ginger juice. This will see you through till the end of the day, even if you decide to keep company of the dehydrating spirits I warned you about!

3.      Roast cumin and mix in a glass of water. Drink this slowly to aid digestion.

4.      Mix some roasted and ground coriander seeds in a glass of clear buttermilk. Drink this up for speedy digestive relief.

5.      Drink some green tea or herbal tea (without milk) to aid your digestion after a meal.

6.      Munching a teaspoon of aniseed after your meal will provide relief to an upset stomach.

7.      Add a few drops of peppermint extract to a glass of water. Drink this for instant relief for stomach ailments.

When you get home, do catch a lot of sleep so that you are not constipated the next morning. Have a happy Holi!
