Limited Avenues At plus Two Levels

Sheela is having nightmares since last year when her daughter came to ninth standard. Her daughter is among the first batch of students writing CBSE tenth board examination   with CCE evaluation. She left her comfortable school job to be with her daughter during her preparation for exams and to give her moral support. She takes her for tuition classes in the morning before school and for IIT coaching after school.

CBSE introduced continuous comprehensive evaluation in 2009 September and confusion reigned amongst the parents and teachers of the present CBSE tenth class batch till September,2010.Under CCE every learner   is to be evaluated over the entire period of learning schedule rather than three hour external examination at the end of  a course of learning. All the students of CBSE tenth class have to write external board examination if they are leaving the school and internal board examination if they are continuing in the same school.

Sheela’s problem doesn’t end here. Like most of the parents in Vizag, Sheela too prefers a corporate college for her daughter’s plus two level educations. There are a number of corporate colleges in Vizag vying with one another to attract students by projecting the achievements of their students. These colleges grind the students from morning till evening. The sections are divided as per the intelligence quotients and the teaching and care also changes accordingly. There is a senior lecturer, a junior lecturer, a tutor and a demonstrator to take care of one section. Students of Narayana, SriChaitanya and Vikas Educational Institutions bagged a good number of ranks in the IIT-JEE 2010.Zonal in charge of Narayana Educational Institutions G.Ramlingeswara Rao says a lot of dedication and hard work o the part of teachers had helped in boosting the self confidence of the students. Head of Vizag FIITJEE centre B.Gurunadh says that their mission is to provide wholesome school education to students. He says that FIITJEE does not believe in impositions instead they want students to do different types of questions.

The parents of students aspiring for engineering and medical stream have a wide range of corporate colleges to choose from. But Reena is not happy with these colleges as her son does not aspire for medical or engineering .In fact Reena’s son does not want to opt for science stream. The city does not offer a good school for such students. The handful of senior secondary schools in the city does not have good faculty. A senior teacher of Visakha Valley School says that their Arts Faculty is not up to date and hence does not ensure excellent results.

There is a dearth of reputed senior secondary schools in Vizag .Students and parents are left with no choice but to repose their confidence in the corporate colleges where the success mantra is to slog from morning till evening and to study only mathematics and science.
