Dolphins are very intelligent creatures, world’s most gentle mammals and can be easily used in therapy to have a positive impact on the lives of those who have been disabled or challenged in some way. Dolphins communicate very well with their species and love companionship. They live in huge family groups and are highly compassionate animals also. It would be interesting to study how they can be used in therapy and give benefits of healing.

It is quite true that dolphins are very protective, patient and tolerant creatures. These intelligent creatures give the benefits of positive social interaction. Yes, various mentally disabled persons have been able to open out and express their feelings openly to others. These people have swum with dolphins and have been able to experience the healing effect of being able to tackle the stress and disappointments of daily living. And dolphins have been very protective towards disabled children and pregnant women.

Dolphins used in therapy have surely been able to improve the motor skills of the disabled children and have the positive effects of improving hand –eye –coordination. Yes, it has helped autistic children to undergo healing and become more responsive and communicative, where many other therapies have not proved very effective. Children with dyslexia and other learning disorders have had great healing and improvement effects. It has been a boon in giving healing effects to children undergoing treatment for cancer and provided them memorable experiences.

Dolphin therapy could involve swimming with wild or captive dolphins. Swimming with wild dolphins maybe a bit risky and should be done only in groups. In addition there may be sharks also in the deep waters where dolphins live and are busy eating. However only reputed tour agencies can handle such contingencies. However dolphin assisted therapy with captive dolphins is more in a controlled environment and would suit everyone, Also this therapy is carried on in shallow waters only.

There are a number of theories to this effect. There is no scientific evidence regarding the long-lasting effects and benefits.  It is contended that probably the sense of well-being and inner peace created in the mind contributes to the healing effects. However others feel that it is due to the healing effect of dolphins. Some others contribute that the healing effects of dolphin therapy is due to the ultrasound from the dolphin’s sound while communicating and moving which effect the body tissues and contribute to the stimulation of the body’s endocrine system, while generates healing effects.

To conclude, dolphin therapy can provide healing benefits to all, provided it is done safely and in the supervision of experts. So do consult your specialist before undergoing this therapy for health benefits.
