It is great to read that the DNB diploma offered by the National Board of Examinations , New Delhi, India has gained recognition in Europe and Middle East. The RCS Edinburgh now recognizes surgeons with this degree to have satisfactorily completed post graduate training in India. For the patient seeking a surgeon it means that a surgeon who possesses DNB diploma has undergone standardised training and exhibited his proficiency in a exam which is conducted on a all India basis. The MS degree has lost its credibility due to its reckless passing rate of 100 percent. All private universities are busy selling MS degrees without paying any heed to the surgical skills and knowledge of the candidates. It is high time that the surgical skills of trainee surgeons need to be assessed. The concept of operative log books was brought in with the same intention. But unfortunately the details furnished by the candidates in these log books is false and fabricated.Health authorities need to make appointments of heads of department based on their accomplishments and not on the basis of their unscrupolous flexibility which happens to be the sole criteria for selection in our country.Only properly appointed  professors can make a difference in the training system.
