A study reveals that chronic psychological stress is a vital fator in the development of diabetes among Indians. At a recent press conference, study author S.V. Mathu of the University college of medical sciences said that newly detected diabetics display higher chronic environmental stress levels and poor stress coping capacity that could lead to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.
Diabetes being a major health and economic burden in India, Mathu said that type 2 diabetes Could best be preVented by lifestyle interventions than drugs.
Close to 85% of patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight says Mathu and added that despite obesity being a major contributor towards developent of type 2 diabetes, 90% of overweight people are not aware of it.
Mathu,organising chairman, (RSSDI) Research society for the study of diabetes in India,cautioned that all of us in India are sitting on a diabetes time bomb and that several issues concerning diabetes are not talked about like:
* The fact that scores of Indian women aquire diabetes during pregnancy
* Urbanisation a major factor in the increase of diabetes in India
* Series of myths still associated with diabetes in India
* Stress a trigger for diabetes
The forthcoming conference to be held from November 10-2013 by (RSSDI) will see a gathering of experts in diabetes control and prevention and will reveal new findings in the field of diabetes control and prevention based on research.We hope that the findings will offer solutions for the several unaddressed issues concerning diabetes.
