India is managing about 5.5 million units of blood annually where the need is around 10 million as on date. Of this only 10% are women donors. Countries like Thailandd, Zimbabwe has registered about 40% of women blood donors but India's performance is very poor in this area. India is reeling under blood deficit of 35-40 percent per year and the crisis is even more in government run blood banks where they run under replacement management system-which is risky. The general mindset of Indian public is "I will donate blood when I need it". "Blood Banks sell Blood, so do not donate blood".

This mindset is creating severe blood shortage in blood banks. What general public should understand that blood banks charge only testing and operational costs. They can not make profit out of these charges. Besides, when people do not donate blood in 'Camps', blood banks become helpless. They have to insist on relacement when you need blood. And when you donate blood in emergency it is difficult to test the blood unit completely, making whay for chance of transfusion infection.Hence general public should come forward and donate blood in camps.

Habit of regular blood donation is good for blood donor and blood supply in any country. When a blood donor regularly donates blood, he is checked for his health status and also can help the city to maintain sufficient blood stock in blood bank. This way they reduce the chances of TTI and help society.

So on this World Blood Donor Day, every one must visit the nearest blood bank and donate blood voluntarily. One can also contact a blood bank to organizer blood camp at one's office, residence or business.

Come forward and reduce blood crisis in India.
