8th May 2011. WORLD THALASSEMIA DAY & THALASSEMIA WEEK.
On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, 8th May 2011; Prathama Blood Centre has planned series of activities and events for the Thalassemia Children, Blood Support Group members Prathama and general public of Ahemedabad city.
Prathama has celebrated “Thalassemia Week” from 8th May to 13th May 2011 in association with various corporate houses like INTAS, CAMBAY, HILTI, KATARIA MOTOR, INDOTECH, NIRMA religious groups like ART OF LIVING, SWAMINARYAN TEMPLE-KATLAL, housing societies like MAYFAIR apartment. About 900 voluntary donors donated blood for Thalassemia Major children. It is given to all the children who need blood transfusion on regular basis.
In past of couple of years Prathama has launched various activities to eradicate Thalassemia and give unconditional support to Thalassemia children and their family members.

Blood Donation Program:
To create awareness among general public on Thalassemia, Prathama is launched a "Support Thalassemia T-Shirts". 1000 T-Shirts is distributed among voluntary blood donors to spread awareness among blood donors. It is officially launched on 8th May at 9 am by giving it to the first blood donor at Prathama Blood Centre at Vasana.

From 5.30 PM to 6.30 PM
Thalassemia Awareness Workshop
A Workshop on Bone Marrow Transplantation and Stem Cell Therapy Presentation done by Dr.Uday at Auditorium of Prathama Blood Center. This encouraged the families with Thalassemia Majors to look for various options available in advanced treatment. About 100 parents along with Thalassemia Major children attend the workshop where they interacted with doctors and Transfusion Specialists.
Thalassemia Adoption Program
From 6.30 pm to 7.00 pm
About 100 Thalassemia children who need financial support to meet the medical expenses are supported by Prathama Blood Center with the help of financial sponsors & sundry donors. Every sponsor adopts a child and takes care of child's need for a year. There are 150 such sponsors who have come forward so far. Prathama provides free blood support to these children and also arranges other medical assistance. About 40 such families given Free Blood Support Coupons on this Day.
Evening Program at Kankaria.
From 6.00 PM to 10 PM
Prathama Blood Centre is organizing various awareness programs on Thalassemia at Kankaria for Thalassemia Children and members of Blood Support Group for Thalassemia.
Free rides, gifts are given to children of blood donors and children with Thalassemia. At the same time awareness materials are distributed to people seeking support for the cause. Awareness created among youngsters on Thalassemia Screening before marriage. 3000 informative materials distributed to public on that day at Kankaria.
