Since a long time ‘mint’ is known for its soothing effects on inflamed tissues. But many people are unaware about this property of mint. Most of them think of peppermint as a remedy for indigestion.

But when used externally, peppermint gives a soothing effect.

When applied to sunburn, peppermint cools and soothes the burn. It is also an antiseptic. It reduces the chances of an infection.

Using Peppermint to Treat Sunburn-

Have a peppermint bath. While doing so use warm water, not hot water. Prepare a strong decoction of peppermint tea and add it to the bathing water. Soak the body in this water for as long as desired. Repeat as and when required.

You can also cool this peppermint tea decoction and apply it directly to the skin.

Peppermint tea decoction can also be used to prepare a cold compress. Applying this to the burn also gives soothing effects.

Instead of using peppermint tea decoction one can also use essential oil of peppermint. But it is important to use it very sparingly because it is extremely concentrated and strong.

Some people have very sensitive skin. They may sometimes develop a rash or other skin irritation in response to peppermint.

Also peppermint oil should never be applied on the face of a baby or young child. Inhaling the fumes of peppermint oil can cause a reflex choking or gagging reaction in children.
