We come across many people who cut and hurt themselves. Such kind of people has a very strange addiction towards pain. They hurt themselves when they are emotionally hurt, stressed and depressed.   People call it self-harm, idiocy and mental illness; however the medical term used for such disease is Self-Injury Disorder.

Self-injury, as the name says, is a mental disorder where patients like to cut themselves and enjoy the pain. It is one of the most common disorders amongst adolescent. The causes of such painful disorder vary from depression, lack of emotional support and comfort, stress loneliness to name some. People who self-harm have gone through painful and soul shaking experiences that they are not able to cope with in life. There are many famous names that are in the list of examples. Disney fans are definitely aware of Demi Lovato’s story, but you may be well aware of Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Scherzinger, who have been addicted to such painful pleasure in their past times.

What is the reason behind such behavior? What makes the pain a pleasure to these people? Many celebrities and normal people have opened up with their stories. In most of them, it was observed that the ending of relationships, stress and pressure related to their career, psychological, sexual and physical harassment and lack of emotional support leads to such disorder. Not just cutting, people also starve and stop eating for days together to numb themselves. Reading all these, we might have a negative view about such people. But who knows, there are equally painful stories hidden behind the cuts and scars of these people.

When a normal person is emotionally distressed and hurt, they choose to talk it out to their best friends and family. But some choose to hurt themselves instead. Pain helps them to release the stress that has been suffocating them from inside for quite a long time. When they feel hurt and distressed, they often don’t know how to put it in words, and hence they choose to harm themselves. This provides them a temporary relief from the distress. People who self-harm are not quite aware at the moment that they are harming themselves. Every scar, every fresh injury screams out that they have a painful story behind it.

A shoulder that supports a weeping head and a friend who listens and understands is very much needed in life. So, if you ever come across people who have scars and bruises on their hands, they might have survived a battle in their life.
