The American Heart Association has recommended fish and fish oil capsules to reduce the risk of developing heart disease. They have also stated that even people who already have a heart disease or high triglyceride levels could benefit from them as well.

HEART DISEASE- EPA (eicosapentaenoin acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oil helps reduce the risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Research has proved that these fatty acids can inhibit the development of plaque and blood clots. It helps lower triglycerides. It offers protection from sudden cardiac death by reducing cardiac arrhythmias.

DIABETES- often people with diabetes have low HDL (high density lipo proteins) and high triglyceride levels. The omega-3 fatty acids present in fish oil helps lower triglycerides.

ARTHRITIS- Several studies have stated that omega-3 supplementation helps reduce the tenderness in joints. It helps relieve the pain due to morning stiffness.

DEPRESSION- People deficient in omega-3 fatty acids might be at an increased risk of depression. Fish oil capsules are also helpful in people already dealing with depression because these fatty acids are components of nerve cell membranes. These fatty acids are important in maintaining good mental health by helping the nerve cells communicate effectively with each other.

BREAST CANCER- Some researchers have said that omega-3 fatty acids in combination with other nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E and minerals like selenium may prove to be helpful in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

ATTENTION DEFICIT / HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) - Studies have shown that children with ADHD may have lower levels of essential fatty acids. Fish oil supplements seem to be effective in children with learning and behavioral problems.
