Recently great advances have been made with regard to weight loss pills and surgery. However, they are short cuts that need to be avoided. The pillar of healthy weight loss still remains weight loss diets and increased energy expenditure every day. It is a myth that long term weight loss can be achieved with either dieting or with exercise alone. Remember both are important.

Before trying any short cuts, do keep in mind that, of the several commercially available remedies for obesity, many make exaggerated claims and are based on non-scientific reasearches. We can blame it on genes, but it is true that we Indians need more exercise to maintain our metabolism.

When you have achieved your target weight, you need to stick to intensive and consistent exercise to prevent weight gain.

ProteHigh in Diet (Atkins Diet): High protein intakes may have greater satiating effects than higher carbohydrate intake, but further research is needed to prove their efficacy. High animal protein in take has been linked to higher risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), cancer as well as osteoporosis and kidney diseases.

Low Carbohydrate Diet: Low carbohydrate diets may be accompanied by greater weight loss than other diets because of the greater loss of water.

Low –Fat Diets: Long term use of low fat diet decreases the risk of heart disease by nearly 60 per cent. Weight loss through these diets is achieved because of the reduction in calories and not because of increased metabolism.

Some useful tips for weight loss:

*Sip on green tea more often to rev your metabolism.

*Fill up on water and fibre. It will keep you satiated and rise up your metabolism.

*Eating more monounsaturated fatty acids found in avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, peanut butter, dark chocolate and olive oil helps in losing inches.

*Have amla juice in the morning empty stomach it helps in constipation and also in remaining slim.
