Important Body Organs that are Neglected

Maintaining and caring for the whole body has become part of everyone’s routine. Though many gyms, fitness centers and diet regimens are being followed, there are some important and very essential organs in our body which are being neglected and not properly taken care of.

Here are 3 organs commonly neglected.

THE BRAIN

Everyone knows about the brain, its function and its importance. It takes care of all functions in our body. But we hardly take time to care for its wellbeing. We go to gym and maintain diet to be physically fit but what do we do for brain fitness? Our brains are more likely to get wasted from underuse than overuse. Although for a machine the rule is “use it and lose it”, in case of brain its “use it or lose it”. Not putting the brain to regular use increases the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Here are some easy ways to maintain a healthy brain.

Regular exercise

Maintaining a BMI from 18-25

Healthy balanced diet

No smoking

Limiting alcohol to about a glass of wine a day

Studies have shown that physical exercise produces new memory cells, but mental exercise preserves and protects the existing nerve cells.

EARS

Ears are one of the most neglected and abused organ. Everyone talks about its importance in hearing not many people know about its function in maintaining balance of the whole body. If the inner ear is affected, that person would experience giddiness and vertigo and even complete loss of hearing due to nerve damage apart from common symptoms of infection like fever and ear pain. ENT specialists tell that 15-20% of the population will have ear problems at any given point of time and among them majority are children. Most common among them are bacterial and fungal infection of the middle ear or ear canal (otitis media interna or externa) owing to the humidity, dust and pollution which favors growth of microbes. Even a common cold or throat infection enters the ear through a connection from throat to the ear (Eustachian canal) if not treated properly. Two common mistakes people do are poking or scratching the ear with sharp objects and pouring hot oil, water or hydrogen peroxide into the ear for cleaning. What you have to remember is that the ear has a cleansing mechanism of its own through secretions at night. Proper hygiene and regular visits with a ENT specialist is mandatory. Rest of it will be taken care of the ear by itself.

THE FEET

You must be wondering why I have included the feet in the list. Various studies show that millions of women and at least one in five men suffer from foot problem which includes foot pain and diabetic foot. “The feet are perhaps the most neglected complex structure in the body” said Katy Bowman, a biochemist and author of “Whole body Barefoot: Transitioning well to minimal footwear” .Everyone who work out are more worried about the hips, knees and ankles, but seldom forgets that the stability actually starts at the foot. Foot problems varies from a simple foot pain following trauma, a very common diabetic foot to a  dangerous condition resulting in loss of blood supply to the foot due to a narrow or clogged  blood vessel(critical limb ischemia) due to which a person might lose their foot. A simple healthy diet, diabetic control, regular foot care checkup and 15-minute foot exercise without footwear is essential for a healthy foot.
