The study of Estrogen receptor alpha gene (ESR 1 gene) polymorphism in females of age group 45-70 suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus have showed that this gene polymorphism might be a risk of diabetes , hypertriglyceredemia and thus leading to cardiovascular diseases.

Recent data of estrogen (one form is estradiol) revealed a surprising role in regulating energy metabolism and estrogen helps in reduction of hyperglcemia and thus inhibiting diabetes through receptor mediated mechanism.
