When I was going through treatment, I was asked many times how my family and friends were dealing with my cancer. Well, my kids handled it ok, they just stayed out my way when I was aggravated because of the medications and helped when I was too sick to feed myself. But my intimate relationship suffered. He drifted away because it was too much to deal with.

Some of my friends stayed away too, because they said they didn't know what to say to me. They felt helpless too. Many of them didn't continue out friendship. My parents didn't want to talk about it, and to this day they don't. I have new friends now, ones that support me. It is difficult to have cancer but more difficult when you have no one to help you get thru it.

I tell everyone that if you know someone with cancer, don't leave them. Go to support meeetings with them, call them, and when you don't have anything to say, just come and sit with them.  Cancer patients need friends too.
