Rains have come at last. We are feeling the tip of winter due to the coolness which the rains have brought. The long dry season has passed and now rain is lashing the city. But, is the city in position to tackle the precious water?
Poor drainage, inundated streets, traffic jams, knee-deep dirty water are all part of city life during rains. I just stood on the balcony and watched the misery of people who walk and travel on the roads. Oops. When is our city going to change? In another ten years, traffic would have increased heavily. Is the city ready for it?
Management of rain water is an important part of city development. Urban rain water should neither be drained as waste water nor be completely harvested as a resource. A natural hydrological cycle should be maintained. Four methods can be used to manage rain water.
1. Rainwater harvest
2. Rainwater infiltration
3. Rainwater storage
4. Rainwater pipes
5. Proper management of sewage system
Efforts must be taken to maintain a clean city. It is the combined effort of public and officials to take care of the city. Most people are worried about how clean their homes are. But they do a lot to make the streets dirty. This attitude also has to change. Let us be positive and hope for a much better place to live.
