Laparoscopic repair for paraumbilical or umbilical hernia has a very recurrence rate. It sounds a tempting option for patients. but the problem with this method is the failure of the system used to fix the mesh from within. Invariably due to high forces acting on the anterior abdominal wall , these fixation devices become loose and fall off, giving rise to  a recurrence. A operation for a recurrent problem has even a higher recurrence rae as the local tissue strength is lost.I have operated more than  25 recurrent paraumbilical hernias wherein the first surgery was performed laparoscopically. The time taken for recurrence is approximately as early as 5to 6 months.Open surgery is the best option for this type of hernia.
