It would seem interesting and humorous to know that some people suffer from Coulrophobia an intense fear of clowns. Yes, Coulrophobia may be mild, medium or intense and affects not only children, but teenagers and adults too. It sounds interesting to note that celebrities like Johnny Depp, Billy Bob Thornton, Daniel Radcliffe and Sean Combs are coulrophobics.

It is true that Coulrophobia starts early in childhood and could include any person like Santa Claus or any person with a painted face who generally entertain others. Johnny Depp a celebrity-cum-coulrophobic said that their painted faces makes it difficult to distinguish if they were happy or out to bite your face.  Coulrophobia is very common and every 1 out of 7 people have it and experience symptoms ranging from high anxiety to outright panic attacks.  This fear develops when people in clown outfit or bizarre attire come near to you. It could be an early childhood traumatic event and could the trigger future events. You could forget the actual event by the phobia lingers on till later in life.

A coulrophobic could have reactions like trembling, shaking, perspiration, nausea with a voice choking and improper breathing Famous rapper and music producer Sean Comb was a Coulrophobic and put a strict  “No Clown Clause” in his performance agreements. Also Billy Bob Thornton a man of multiple phobias like antique furniture, dolls, chicken and bright colors once said, “It’s like you don’t really know the guy that’s lurking behind the face.”

This fear of clowns or Coulrophobia can be cured by proper treatment, besides medications, hypnotherapy and various other therapies. One simple way would be to avoid the clowns either in reality or in films or television series until you are in a position to handle the phobia boldly.  However sometimes confronting the fear could help in principle, but this is to be done gradually; yes never follow the "full-emersion approach”, but dip into the water one toe at a time."

Hypnotherapy helps in reprogramming your subconscious mind and debugging the symptoms Coulrophobia. However many may feel they are controlled by others and may resist it. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) a form of hypnotherapy helps in minimizing and eliminating this phobia and is rapid and effective. Energy Psychology is another therapy that helps you quickly change your behavioral patterns, make you a part in your recovery and change your thought process besides developing these skills for a lifetime.

To conclude the cure of Coulrophobia also lies in the mind of the phobic. If no easy methods work or the phobia is chronic do take a professionals help to save yourself or your near and dear from Coulrophobia.
