How to consume fruits and vegetables?

Fruits and vegetables are good for health. They are a unique combination of bright colours, high nutrition and low calories. The pigment that is present is fruits and vegetables have got special benefits. Children should consume at least five different colour s of fruits and vegetables every day.

 

It is good to consume organic fruits and vegetables, but it is not always possible for everyone to get these. What we can do is to buy from reliable shops. Also avoid those that are exceptionally bright and shiny as they may be artificially coloured and polished. Wash properly and peel your vegetables whenever possible.

 

The other thing that can be done is to cultivate your own small kitchen garden where you can grow organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits have been aptly called functional foods because besides providing nutrients they also contain special disease fighting protective plant pigments called phytochemicals that have anti-oxidant properties.

 

Fruits and vegetables have Vitamin C, Vitamin A, B, folic acid, Vitamin E and potassium. Due to their nutritional composition, high fibre and water content, these natural foods have enormous therapeutic benefits. Fruits and vegetables protect us from cancer, strokes and all kinds of cardiovascular diseases. Fibre plays an important role in maintaining blood glucose levels within the normal range. Fruits and vegetables are good for diabetic patients as well. It is good for diabetic patients because diabetic patients are more prone to eye problems, kidney failure and nerve damage. However they should be careful while consuming fruits and vegetables because there are some fruits and vegetables like mangoes, bananas, potatoes, yam sweet potatoes because they are very high in sweet and starch.
