Restful sleep is the deprivation of the modern times. Everyone craves for good sleep, but it is the gift for  a few people only. Gone are the times when people used to say that if we went early to bed we would be healthy, wealthy and wise. An early bedtime does not guarantee a good sleep where the body is refreshed and good for a day full of responsibilities. Yes, bedtime routine plays an equally important role if not more than an early bedtime.

Normally every person needs at least 6 to 8 hours of good sleep. This has become a rarity in the modern age of cutthroat competition and rapid industrialization. Gone are the days when each person went for an 8 hour job and was home much before bedtime and had time to do other things like spending quality time with his family and got a chance to rejuvenate himself by rest and recreation. In most instances he is not home even by bedtime.

The children are also not free as before and are loaded with a lot of other activities and homework. In addition with the double income families they find their parents as just the daily visitors who leave early in the morning to be met only at bedtime. They are just  puppets who are programmed to get up at a specific time in the morning and retire to bed likewise.

I do agree that bedtime plays a vital role in the health of a person. It helps a person to get enough of sleep before an equally taxing day. However while retiring to bed, it is is equally important to have a good bedtime routine that makes a person feel calm and peaceful before sleep. It is advisable not to hear the late night news before retiring to bed. In the similar way it is best to avoid reading sensational books or watching popular emotional soap operas before retiring to bed at night. If one must watch or hear the news it is better to do it a few hours before bedtime.

Similarly never discuss your differences with your spouse or children in bed. Also put aside your office files a few hours before bedtime and look at them only on the next morning or later in the office. Sitting on the computer till late night is to be avoided at all cost.  The best bedtime routine could be hearing to soothing and relaxing music or reading philosophical books. In addition spending happy times with the family as part of bedtime routine helps induce good sleep.  It would also help to have hot milk or a chocolate drink before bedtime.

Children need good sleep to feel fresh to go to school as well as take part in various activities. It would help if parents spent some time at bedtime with their small children telling them stories or doing something relaxing before putting them to sleep. Never scold your children at bedtime and do not threaten them for anything. Believe in the fact that the children are the seeds of the future and need to be nurtured well to become useful people in life. Children need to be given love and affection as well as talked to happily at bedtime as part of a bedtime routine.

I am sure you will agree with me that we all have a vital role to play on this earth and doing this requires us to be relaxed and rejuvenated. This is essential for our productivity and growth.
