Do you think childhood is the best part of your life? For many it is a period of joy and fun. But, for a section of people childhood is not as easy as it is thought. Depression is not only found among adults, but also among children. Childhood depression is common among children also. Sadly, childhood depression goes unnoticed and little is done to solve the problem. Not many parents are aware of this problem that their child could face. Sometimes the depression could be a passing phase only. But still it requires attention.

 

Symptoms of childhood depression could be mood changes, sleep problems, irritation, eating problem, loss of interest in activities, games, anger and temper tantrums.

 

There could be lot of reasons for depression in childhood. It could be exam failure, peer pressure or peer acceptance. The child may be teased in school. Family problems could also be a major reason for depression in kids. When parents fight in front of the children, it does affect the kids. Loss of parents could also be a reason for childhood depression. Sometimes reasons can not be understood.

 

Depression in childhood comes with multiple disorders. So, it is important to identify the problem rightly. A thorough and correct evaluation of the child is important. Medications can used to cure this problem. For children with family problems, low self esteem, anger etc, individual therapy would be apt. If the child has problems in school, interacting with school counselor and teachers is important. The school environment should be ideal for a child's development. Evaluation at home is also vital. Like school modification, home modification is also important. Even parents have to be taught to handle the child wisely. The child must be happy comfortable at home.

 

Childhood is a beautiful experience. Let us make sure that our child has had the best portion of it.
